Just use they
# Why?
-
It's shorter.
Saying "they" instead of "he or she" is shorter. It's just one word compared to three.
-
It's more inclusive.
You might think including "both" options is good enough, but not everyone goes by he/him or she/her.
They/them is neutral and includes everyone.
# But isn't they/them plural?
No, actually. They/them can be used as the 3rd person plural, but it can also absolutely be used as the 3rd
person singular. For example,
"I went to the petrol station yesterday and saw that someone had forgotten their wallet. Luckily,
they had their contant info written on the inside so I was able to return it to them."
See? I'm sure you were able to understand that perfectly fine.
# But isn't that incorrect grammar?
No. In fact, singular they has been in the English language way longer than singular you! If thou wish to use grammar
from before singular they was a thing, then thou may not use "singular you" either. And if thou don't believe me,
here:
"(...) And singular they, which appears in English writing as early as the fourteenth century. By the seventeenth
century, singular you started to appear not just as a polite form, but in every context, and singular thou and
the other th- forms, thee, thy, and thine, began to disappear. (...)"

# What if they don't want me to use they/them? / What if I know their pronouns?
Then use their pronouns of course! This page was made for people who say "he or she" instead of "they" when talking
about an unknown person or someone whose pronouns they don't know, I am definitely not saying we should use they/them
for everyone!
# But it feels weird to say!
Changing old habits always feels weird at first, that's perfectly normal! You just need to get used to singular they;
I swear it won't take long for it to not feel weird anymore! Just remember, you're doing this to say more with fewer
words - not only are you using a single word for the same thing you needed three for before, you're also being more
inclusive!
